Martin J. Small, BSEE
Martin J. Small earned three degrees from New Mexico State University: a B.S. in computer science, a B.S. in mathematics, and a B.S. in electrical and computer engineering.
His student employment included two co‑op phases at White Sands Missile Range as a computer programmer, two years as a systems programmer for EG&G Technical Services in Albuquerque, and a part‑time internship at NMSU’s Physical Science Laboratory in the radio frequency design group.
After graduation, Small spent five years at PSL as a systems engineer, eventually becoming chief of systems technologies before leaving in 1986 to found CALCULEX, Inc. in Las Cruces.
CALCULEX specializes in developing state‑of‑the‑art electronics and software systems for engineering applications. The company celebrated its 23rd year of operation with total revenue exceeding $100 million.
Small has remained deeply connected to NMSU. In 2002, he was inducted into the Electrical and Computer Engineering Academy and has served in an advisory role ever since.
In 2003, he was honored as Ingeniero Eminente, recognizing alumni who have distinguished themselves in their field and serve as role models for new graduates.
A native of Las Cruces, Small is also dedicated to the community. He is a member of the Las Cruces High Technology Consortium and the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance, and has been a strong supporter of the New Mexico BEST Robotics competition for the past decade.
