Jerome “Jerry” Shaw
Jerome “Jerry” Shaw
In 1950, Jerome “Jerry” Shaw and his brother William pooled their resources and started a technical writing business with just $13 — enough to buy paper and pencils.
Today, Shaw is the executive vice president and chief operations officer of Volt Information Sciences, Inc., a global staffing supplier with annual sales of approximately $2 billion. He directs Volt’s day‑to‑day operations, overseeing more than 300 offices worldwide. Shaw has been instrumental in Volt’s growth from a small entrepreneurial startup into a Fortune 1000 corporation recognized on the Fortune “Most Admired Companies” list.
Shaw also built a second successful career in real estate. After moving to California in 1959, he acquired 650 acres of land and worked through city and county processes to obtain approvals for Tentative Maps. He also created an award‑winning residential development in northern San Diego County, Shaw‑Lopez Park. Remarkably, Shaw developed his real estate ventures exclusively on weekends while continuing his full‑time work at Volt.
Shaw earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University. In 1995, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus by the College of Engineering, and in 2001 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. He is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering Academy, and Sigma Tau.
Shaw and his wife, Joyce Cutler‑Shaw, have a long history of philanthropy to NMSU and many other institutions. In 1999, they established a scholarship to support students. In recognition of their contributions, the Jerome and Joyce Cutler‑Shaw Conference Room in Goddard Hall was dedicated in their honor in 2001.
On October 20, 2006, Shaw was inducted into the NMSU College of Engineering Circle of Honor.
