In 2015, Brieanna Wells began her career with the NMSU College of Arts and Sciences as a graduate assistant. Currently, she is a program manager for the Office of Engineering Research. Wells is a 2017 NMSU graduate. She earned her master’s degree in English, with an emphasis in rhetoric and professional communication.
“My favorite feature of my job is being among the first to read about the innovative and cutting-edge research that our faculty pursues. Each proposal I assist with represents a glimpse into new, cutting-edge science and technology concepts, filled with the potential to not only advance knowledge but also to address and solve real-world problems,” she said.
As program manager, Wells’ daily responsibilities include assisting with all pre-award steps for research grants in the College of Engineering. She identifies relevant funding opportunities that align with the interests and expertise of faculty members; assists faculty in developing strong and competitive grant proposals by providing guidance on proposal structure, ensuring compliance with sponsor guidelines; and helps with budget preparation.
Wells serves as a liaison between faculty and other university departments to facilitate clear communication and ensure all requirements are met. She reviews proposals for completeness, accuracy and compliance before coordinating the final submission process.
Wells also maintains detailed records of all proposals, communications and submissions; tracks deadlines; assists with grant award set-up when an engineering faculty member receives a grant award; and addresses any issues or questions that arise during the proposal development process.
“It's incredibly exciting to be able to participate in the early stages of these novel concepts and to play a role in helping professors transition their ideas into the next phase, knowing they could lead to significant contributions to society and transformative changes in various engineering fields,” she said.
