(October 26, 1923 - October 1, 2023 )
Dave was born on October 26th 1923 in Norborne, Missouri to David Franklin and Lily (Burtner) Herring. He lived in Missouri during his early years until moving to Chesterton, IN when his father moved for a new job. He was a graduate of Chesterton High School where he met a brown eyed freshman girl who he fell in love with his senior year. After graduation he worked in a few areas including the KOP until he joined the army to serve during WWII in the European theater in the 12th Armored Division as a scout.
After the war he came home and became reacquainted with the brown eyed girl who would later become his wife on December 21st, 1948. Using the GI bill he enrolled in New Mexico State University where he played on the tennis team and his fraternity house mother taught him to make a mean enchilada. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Shortly afterward he became an engineer with the Bendix Corp. in South Bend and worked on aircraft fuel systems until retirement.
Always a lover of golf, he and his wife moved to Sun City West, AZ shortly after they both retired so he could chase the little white ball every day of the year. They enjoyed many years of retirement there and celebrated 55 years of marriage together. Through the years they took many trips including revisiting sites he had served in during the war in Europe. The favorite place to visit however was always Jamaica and they went back many times with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers, and his wife Naida (Gunnerson) Herring. He is survived by his daughter Lane (Tim) Theriac and several nephews and nieces. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Camino del Sol funeral home of Sun City West with private interment in the National Memorial Cemetery of Phoenix, AZ.
