Avorald passed away after a long journey with Alzheimer’s, at age 83, on July 21, 2022. Even with Alzheimer’s, Len still kept his dry sense of humor. Avorald was a loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his daughters Veronica Carlson (husband Brent), Dyan Larmey (husband Steve), and Michalle Baird, and grandchildren Keegan and Skyler Carlson (Veronica), Tesfaye, Caleb, Zoe and Epiphany Larmey (Dyan). Avorald was born on January 8, 1939 in New York City, New York to Charles and Anna Baird. Avorald had a zest for knowledge and was an adventurous traveler, exploring the world with Emma, his wife of 51 years. Avorald graduated top in his class from New Mexico State University and received a Civil Engineer position with Los Angeles County in 1962. In 1970, Avorald accepted a position with the City of Phoenix, Street Transportation Engineering Department. Len was a strong, colorful, and effective manager with his own unique style. He truly cared about all of his employees as well as those in other divisions. He adored his dog Curly and Curly adored Avorald. We said good-bye to Curly on September 16, 2022. Curly survived Len and was with him until the end. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 4 until 7 PM, with Rosary to be held at 6:30 PM at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird Rd. Peoria 85381. In celebration of Avorald’s life, a mass will held on November 30th at 11:00 AM at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 10815 N. 35th Avenue, Phoenix 85029. We have lost a father and friend with a larger than life personality. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. He lived a full life. We love you, Avorald.
