In memoriam: Gerald Anthony "Doyce" Garcia

GERALD ANTHONY "DOYCE" GARCIA
Gerald Anthony "Doyce" Garcia, a retired Chief Engineer for the New Mexico Public Service Commission, passed away peacefully in Santa Fe with his son by his side on September 6, 2021 from cancer.

Anthony was born on April 17, 1946. He had deep New Mexico family roots that trace to the 1700s when an ancestor owned land which is now El Rancho de Las Golondrinas. Anthony grew up on Delgado Street when everybody knew everybody in Santa Fe, playing with friends around the Acequia Madre area. He went to St. Francis Cathedral Elementary School and made lifelong friends. He graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1964, where he was a starter for the varsity basketball team. He earned his engineering degree from New Mexico State University through a state work and study program.

Anthony's life embodied traditional Northern New Mexican values. He built his home with his father, Rufus Garcia, crafting adobe bricks and hauling vigas from the mountains. He learned to cook from his mother, Josina Garcia, whom he adored. His home included a wood burning stove where Anthony cooked delicious beans and chile. Because of his love of Santa Fe and the people who live in it, he ran for city counselor in 1996 and 2008.

Anthony retired in his early 40s to spend more time with his son, of whom he was very proud. The time, encouragement, and devotion he gave to his son instilled confidence that led Michael to become a 3-time NM state high school champion in track and field, NCAA Division 1 National Champion and to earn degrees from Stanford University and Harvard Medical School. Anthony deeply admired his uncle, Father Mike and his service for others. Anthony instilled in his son Michael this importance of helping others in need, which Michael carries in his heart as he cares for people as a cancer doctor.

Anthony enjoyed fishing in the mountains, projects around his home, and sitting outside the house he grew up in on Delgado Street, quickly making friends with those walking by Canyon Road.
Anthony is survived by his son Michael Anthony Garcia, Michael's wife Alana Garcia, and grandson and namesake, Anthony Jack Garcia. Anthony's legacy of kindness, friendliness, and love of Santa Fe will be carried on by those who love him. A celebration of his life will take place at a later time.
