In memoriam: Steven Frank, former NMSU engineering professor

Dr. Steven Frank, retired surveying engineering professor at New Mexico State University, passed away January 21, 2021.

Frank joined NMSU in 1995 and retired in 2017. Frank taught plane surveying, boundary law, subdivision design and land information systems, and had been licensed as a professional land surveyor in California since 1980 and New Mexico since 1996.

Frank was named Surveyor of the Year by the New Mexico Professional Surveyors in 2007. The award is given out each year to a member of the surveying profession who has given great service to the profession over the years. Nominations come from several chapters of NMPS.

He is also a former president of NMPS as well as the American Association for Geodetic Surveying. He is the co-author of a textbook, Professionalism and Ethics in Surveying.

In 2011, Frank was appointed to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Applied Science Accreditation Commission that provides accreditation to more than 3,100 surveying engineering programs for 600 colleges worldwide. As part of the executive committee, he assisted in leading team visits to evaluate surveying programs, edit ABET evaluation reports, and attended executive committee meetings.

Frank received his bachelor degree in surveying engineering and master’s in civil engineering with an emphasis in surveying engineering from California State University, Fresno. After obtaining his master’s and bachelor’s degrees, he went on to receive his doctorate in surveying engineering from the University of Maine. He has worked in California, Saudi Arabia, and Maine before moving to New Mexico.
