The New Mexico Produced Water Research Consortium, a joint effort between New Mexico State University and the New Mexico Environment Department, has received support from ExxonMobil as a research sponsor.
The sponsorship will help support the consortium’s research, development and demonstration efforts to focus on the technical and health and safety issues associated with the reuse of oil and gas produced water outside the oil and gas sector.
“We are pleased that our strategic partners see the value of the New Mexico Produced Water Research Consortium and are willing to help sponsor the important science and research necessary to inform the regulatory process,” said NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu. “Research sponsors are critical to advancing new and innovative technologies necessary for New Mexico to ensure that produced water can be safely used for important applications outside of the oil and gas industry.”
“We are excited to expand our partnership with ExxonMobil on this important research, particularly as we work to identify opportunities to scale beyond the lab to bench-scale and demonstration projects,” said Pei Xu, PESCO Endowed Professor and Ward Family Endowed Interdisciplinary Chair in Civil Engineering and consortium research director.
As a member of the consortium, ExxonMobil engineers and scientists will participate in the consortium’s research and engineering working groups and projects.
Established in 2019, the consortium is a public-private partnership designed to help New Mexico in continuing to lead the country in advancing scientific and technological solutions related to the treatment and reuse of produced water generated by the oil and gas industry.
