Students from the brewing engineering programme at New Mexico State University visited Institute of Technology Carlow last week to learn about the malting, brewing and distilling industry in Ireland.
The students spent two days out of their week-long Irish visit at the Institute meeting and learning from science and engineering researchers and staff involved in the delivery of Irelands first honours degree in brewing and distilling. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of malting, brewing and distilling in Ireland as well the more recent boom being experienced by the sector. The students also took part in a distilling process engineering workshop and visited a number of local breweries and distilleries in the southeast, which is fast becoming the centre of Ireland’s malting, brewing and distilling growth.
Commenting on their visit, Dr. Catherine Brewer, who is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at New Mexico State University said, “At New Mexico State University, we are in the first year of our Brewery Engineering minor of study within the Chemical Engineering bachelor’s degree. The chance to interact with faculty in the new Institute of Technology Carlow brewing & distilling course, which is at the same stage of development, has been inspiring. Our visit has left us with many new idea and opportunities to explore as we each seek to prepare our students for a growing industry in two very different parts of the world”.
Dr. David Ryan, who is the programme director for the honours degree in brewing and distilling at Institute of Technology Carlow said, “It was wonderful to host this international group of brewing students and lecturers and we look forward to working with the faculty at New Mexico State University in the near future”.
