Academic research is a critical and valued component in the College of Engineering at NMSU. It is what our faculty need to do to be current in their fields of expertise so the students they teach are well educated at both undergraduate and graduate levels. It is an integral part of our learning communities where faculty and students learn together in laboratories and in the field. I do not consider research and teaching to be mutually exclusive activities; they feed each other.
At a recent retreat of academic deans, the following themes were identified as our current or aspirational strengths in the college: 1. water, 2. energy, 3. cybersecurity, 4. civil infrastructure, and 5. STEM education pedagogy. These are broad areas and do not necessarily represent the entire spectrum of our college research. Our faculty members are constantly engaged with others outside the college in their pursuits to define cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and acquire extramural funding from federal and local sources. With new initiatives planned by the Engineering Research Center, our emphasis on research will continue to grow. It gives me great pleasure to see our faculty being successful in competing for federally-funded research centers and winning NSF CAREER awards.

The National Science Foundation has awarded its prestigious CAREER grant to Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professor Wei Tang. The $500,000 award will support his project entitled: “CAREER: Integrated Research and Education on Delta-Sigma Based Digital Signal Processing Circuits for Low-Power Intelligent Sensors.” This award starts Feb.15, 2017 and ends Jan. 31, 2022. Tang received his bachelor degree in microelectronics from Peking University in 2006 and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Yale University in 2012. He joined the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Mexico State University in 2012 as an assistant professor.
College of Engineering Dean Lakshmi Reddi and Associate Provost Cornell Menking visited South India to begin executing pipeline agreements for engineering student recruitment. As part of their activities, they were invited by two television news organizations in Hyderabad to introduce New Mexico State University and the College of Engineering to their viewers. Hyderabad is a prominent city in a region of South India that has hundreds of engineering colleges with students interested in higher education in the United States. In addition to answering questions by anchors, Reddi and Menking participated in a live session and took questions from callers. These broadcasting stations have a routine audience of 18 million people. In addition, Reddi and Menking visited five groups of engineering colleges in the region and began discussions on student recruitment.
The New Mexico State University College of Engineering will present the 42nd Annual Bromilow Lecture featuring Christopher Long, vice president of Orbital ATK National Security Systems.
