We are very grateful for the support of PNM Resources Foundation and the New Mexico Professional Surveyors association for our new geomatics program (see “NMSU, industry partnership enhanced with new gift,” below). Our surveying engineering program was recently revamped to address current and future industry needs and new technologies. Launched this past fall, the geomatics program was developed with substantial direction and support from industry, state and national professional societies. Already gaining recognition, the program received a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Education Award to provide scholarships and state-of-the art instrumentation. This is a wonderful example of what partnerships between industry and academia can achieve to develop innovative, relevant programs. The geomatics program also opens up a new pathway for community college students to complete the four-year degree by completing the final two years at NMSU. We will add a new faculty member in geomatics to begin next fall and we are confident that this important partnership will lead to a premier program in the country for anyone pursuing higher education in the geospatial industry.
