Martin J. Small, BSEE

Distinguished Alumnus Martin J. Small earned three degrees from New Mexico State University: a bachelor of science in computer science, a bachelor of science in mathematics, and a bachelor of science in electrical and computer engineering.

Mr. Small's student employment included two co-op phases at White Sands Missile Range as a computer programmer, two years as a systems programmer for EG & G Technical Services in Albuquerque, and part-time internship at NMSU's Physical Science Laboratory in the radio frequency design group.

Upon graduation, Mr. Small spent five years at PSL as a systems engineer, attaining the position of chief of systems technologies prior to leaving in 1986 to found CALCULEX, Inc. in Las Cruces.

The company specializes in the development and production of state-of-the-art electronics and software systems that satisfy a diversity of engineering applications. This past August, CALCULEX celebrated its 23rd year of operation with total revenue exceeding $100 million.

While Mr. Small has built a successful business, he has never forgotten the engineering education that he received at NMSU. In 2002 he was inducted into the Electrical and Computer Engineering Academy and has served in an advisory capacity to the department ever since.

In 2003 he was honored by the college as Ingeniero Eminente. These recipients, named at graduation time, are NMSU College of Engineering alumni who have distinguished themselves in their field of study and who serve as role models for new graduates.

Mr. Small, a native of Las Cruces, is equally dedicated to the community and is a member of the Las Cruces High Technology Consortium and the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance. Additionally, he has been an ardent supporter of the New Mexico BEST Robotics competition, hosted by the College of Engineering for the past 10 years.
