Professional Master of Industrial Engineering

Your ability to succeed can be enhanced through advanced education. Regardless of the industry — service, research, manufacturing, government, financial, health care, retail, non-profit — employees with a knowledge of industrial engineering play a major role in defining an organization’s future.

The area of study that provides individuals with the skills, techniques and tools to succeed in a wide range of organizational settings is industrial engineering. Industrial engineering involves the design, installation, resource allocation and improvement of integrated systems. These systems may be composed of one, some, or all of the following: people, information, equipment, energy, materials, software and processes.

If solving problems, interacting on multidisciplinary teams, and working in one of the many facets of industrial engineering are of interest to you, then consider the Professional Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering. What you can expect from your industrial engineering degree is the following:

  • A foundation in industrial engineering tools and methodologies
  • A working knowledge of business fundamentals
  • An understanding of how systems are designed, improved and installed
  • The ability to work in teams with other engineers and business people
  • The ability to write and speak clearly and convincingly
  • The ability to think from a systems perspective
  • The ability to analyze and solve problems

Specialization Areas

In studying for the master’s degree in the Department of Industrial Engineering, students have several choices of specialization areas. In many cases, you will have the opportunity to choose a number of elective courses in computer science, manufacturing, mechanical engineering and business that customize your degree to fit your specific needs. Present areas of specialization for the Professional Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering are:

  • Engineering Management
  • Computer Modeling
  • Operations Research
  • Manufacturing Engineering

Requirements

Minimum credit hour requirements for the Professional Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering is 30 semester credits of approved course work. Approved course work must meet all requirements of the NMSU Graduate School, represent a consistent master’s program in relation to a student’s graduate study goals as determined through consultation with the graduate program adviser, and be approved by a program committee of the graduate faculty of the department. Sample programs for the master’s options in engineering management, computer modeling, operations research, and manufacturing engineering are available in the Graduate Student Catalog. At the master’s level, a student enrolled in our program must take at least 50% of the coursework required for the degree while enrolled in the NMSU program. Coursework done elsewhere after initiation of graduation studies must have prior approval of the department and the dean of the Graduate School if such work is to be transferred. For work to be transferred into the program, transfer credit must be earned from an accredited institution offering a similar degree and the student must have been enrolled as a graduate student at that institution. The department has suggested course lists for any student desiring to concentrate in one of the specialization areas.
