The recent bridge collapse on Interstate 5 in Washington serves as an unfortunate reminder that much of our nation’s infrastructure is aging and requires inspection on a regular basis to keep both commercial and personal travelers safe.

NMSU engineers testing dust storm detection and notification system

Dust storms have long plagued the desert southwest and while they may be annoying, they can also be extremely dangerous — deadly even — for motorists. The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office contracted with the Department of Engineering Technology and Surveying at New Mexico State University to find and deploy an automated system that will notify motorists of limited visibility conditions and direct them how to respond during the storms.

New Mexico Department of Transportation partners with NMSU civil engineering to assess condition of highway pavements

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has partnered with NMSU civil engineering faculty, Paola Bandini and Douglas Cortes, to carry out the 2012 Pavement Condition Program.

NMSU civil engineers take bridge evaluation to new level

State-of-the-art procedures in bridge evaluation have shown that several New Mexico bridges can handle load capacities that are 10-20 percent higher than originally thought.

Civil Engineering Department receives four-year grant for highway evaluation

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) recently entered into a four-year agreement with NMSU Civil Engineering Department to collect annual pavement distress data along the road and highway system of southern New Mexico.
