In Memoriam: Stephen Matson

Rock Hill — Stephen Michael Matson, the son of Walter Albion and Matson Hazel Marie Cady Matson Meggison, was born in Estes Park, Colorado on December 4, 1939 and died December 15, 2014, in Rock Hill, S.C. He grew up in Denver, Colorado and attended New Mexico State University and earned a BS (’62) and a MS (’64) in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering. After graduation, he worked at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico for thirty-four years in the Structure and Dynamics Branch.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Eva Jane “Janie”, son, Chistopher L. (Vera) and children, Emma and Connor; son Michael A. and children, Cole, Cody and Tessa-Rae; a sister, Joan Orlowski (Greg) and daughter, Merith Adams. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and step-parents, Ray and Cecilia Meggison.

Steve was active in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico and Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Rock Hill. He was member of the Rock Hill Civitan Club and had served as the club’s president. In addition to his church activities, he was volunteer with the Friends of Library and in earlier years was a Pack Master and Webelo Leader and participated in many a 50- and 100-mile Scout hikes.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with visitation following.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Matson’s name to the Rock Hill Civitan Club, c/o Ella Messer, 748 Emorywood Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730; or to Aldersgate UMC Prayer Garden Fund, 2115 Celanese Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
