Deacon Alfonso “Al” F. Bowers, 80, of Las Cruces entered eternal life Monday, July 27, 2009 at La Posada- Mesilla Valley Hospice. He was born October 3, 1928 in Miami, Oklahoma to Alfonso Sr. and Helen Whitney Bowers.

“Al,” as he was fondly known to his family and friends, was a Professor of Engineering of Engineering Technology at New Mexico State University who retired n the early 1980s. He was an ordained Deacon in the Catholic Church.

Survivors include his loving wife, Irene Silva Bowers of the family home; two sons, Donald Bowers and wife Stephanie Avondale, Arizona, Robert Bowers and wife Christy of Golden, Colorado; three daughters, Barbara Zion and husband Dale, Patricia Depner and husband Kurt all of Las Cruces, Kathleen Duling and husband Kevin of Portland, Oregon; two brothers, Gerald Bowers and wife Arletta of Joplin, Missouri, James Bowers and wife Dorothy of Springfield, Missouri. Other survivors include five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; his parents-in-law, Luis and Cuca Silva of Tortugas; his sisters-in-law, Guadalupe Bulger and husband Denny of Vermont, Teresa Mayhugh and husband Gil of Virginia, Juana Bunyea of Texas and Eloisa Martinez and husband Benny of northern New Mexico as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his 1st wife, Mercedes Bowers; his 2nd wife, Sheila Bowers.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, July 31, 2009 at 9 AM in Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine and Parish, 3600 Parroquia Street in Tortugas with Most Reverend Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B. officiating. Inurnment of cremains will follow the same afternoon at 2 PM in Fort Bayard National Cemetery with military honors accorded by local veterans group.

Family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made the Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 E. Montana Avenue, Las Cruces, NM 88005 or Diocese of Las Cruces, 1280 Medpark Drive, Las Cruces, NM 88005. Entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapels and Baca’s Sunset Crematory, 527-2222.
