Bingaman tours NMSU outreach program

From left, Victor Martinez, a seventh-grader at Chaparral Middle School in Chaparral, N.M., and Lauren Abraham, an eighth-grader at Morehead Middle School in El Paso, demonstrate to U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., how the Lego Space Elevator they built and programmed travels up and down as Laura Lomas, far right, assistant director of the Southern New Mexico Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SNM SEMAA) looks on. Bingaman toured the New Mexico State University SNM SEMAA lab Aug. 17, where he learned about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs at NMSU. The university currently operates 58 STEM programs that reach out to students and teachers from kindergarten to the doctoral level. Martinez has participated in the SEMAA program for five years and Abraham for one. (NMSU photo by Darrell J. Pehr)
