Commitment to Education and Research Earn Recognition for Young Engineer

Dr. Nadir Yilmaz received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Istanbul Technical University (1999), Bradley University (2001) and New Mexico State University (2005), respectively. He is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, as well as, a licensed professional engineer in the state of New Mexico and engineering consultant for the last 10 years.

He has conceived, developed, and assembled a research laboratory for engines and fuels, as well as two educational laboratories which were supported by the State of New Mexico and the Department of Education (STEM Grant). He has advised numerous minority students under the AMP (Alliance for Minority Participation) program for undergraduate research and has successfully taught, supervised and trained many young engineers, which include many women and underrepresented minorities.

Dr. Yilmaz has been involved with numerous externally funded projects including those with the DHS, NSF, U.S. Department of Education, and Sandia National Laboratories, and NASA. Dr. Yilmaz has brought in over 1 million in research grants and has established collaborations with overseas universities, companies, and small businesses in New Mexico and across the United States.

Dr. Yilmaz is an active member of SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education), NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers). He serves as the editor-in-chief for the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants. He is the first educator from a New Mexico Institution to receive the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award in 2011.

Dr. Yilmaz is serving as the President of New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers –Albuquerque Chapter and Chair of ASME –New Mexico Section. He has received numerous teaching, engineering and research awards at the institutional, state, national and international levels including New Mexico “Young Engineer of the Year” Award (2013), New Mexico Tech University Distinguished Teaching Award (2013), ASEE Section Outstanding Teaching Award (2013), SAE International Faculty Advisor Award (2013), U.S. Department of Energy Visiting Faculty Program Fellowship (2012-2013), and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) Visiting Scientist Fellowship (2014).
