Carol Parker, senior adviser for academic affairs, and until recently provost at the University of Texas at El Paso, has been named New Mexico State University’s new provost. NMSU President John Floros announced the appointment earlier today. Parker begins her new role at NMSU on July 22.

“I am certain Provost Parker will be a strong addition to our leadership team at NMSU,” Floros said. “She is a proven leader, has extensive experience in academic affairs, and is known as a fair and thoughtful advocate for faculty, staff and students. She has gotten to know the Southwest Borderlands from her 15 years of experience in New Mexico and West Texas.”
Parker started her academic career as a first-generation, community college student and went on to complete her baccalaureate education while working full time. She says she strongly believes in the power of higher education to provide a vehicle for social mobility.
“I am very impressed with the vision articulated by Chancellor Arvizu and President Floros,” Parker said. “I believe NMSU is well placed to provide strategic leadership for the region and the state through promoting student success, growing research and creativity, and extending the university’s long tradition of outreach and service well into the future. Public research universities are in a unique position to make a difference in the world, and I am particularly pleased to be joining an institution that values providing opportunities for social mobility. I am excited to be able to join the NMSU team and to be able to contribute to the success of NMSU’s important mission in the future.”
Parker has more than two decades of experience as a higher education administrator. She has worked at UTEP since 2017 where she served as provost and vice president for academic affairs. She also worked at the University of New Mexico from 2013-2017 as senior vice provost for academic affairs. Previous to that, she was an associate dean and director at the UNM School of Law.
Her administrative experience includes work in the areas of student success, faculty recruitment and development, academic program development and review, accreditation, budget and finance, capital projects and facilities, economic development, fundraising, policy development, compliance and risk management, information technology and data governance, and strategic planning.
She maintains her license to practice law in Michigan and worked as a research attorney at the Michigan Court of Appeals prior to her academic career. She received a J.D. degree in law from the Wayne State University Law School, a master’s degree in information science from The University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in humanities from Michigan State University’s Honor’s College.
