DENVER – New Mexico State junior forward Brianna Freeman was named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after posting back-to-back double-doubles over the weekend to help keep the Aggies undefeated on the year at 6-0. Freeman is an electrical and computer engineering student.
This is the first player of the week honor for Freeman this season and the third recognition in her career.
The Killeen, Texas, product finished the weekend with 45 points, 26 rebounds, four blocks, four steals and a pair of assists in three games.
After a quiet night against Southern Utah, Brianna Freeman erupted in the two Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic games, notching back-to-back double-doubles to end the week.
Freeman first put up a career-high 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting (.667) from the floor to go with 11 boards and a pair of assists and blocks to help NMSU defeat Northwestern State. The following day, she tallied not only her second-straight double-double, but her third of the year in six games as well as the 12th of her career.
She was one of three Aggies to score in double-figures on Saturday against Northern Arizona, recording 12 points on 10 rebounds with a pair of steals and a block to help NMSU remain as the only WAC team without a loss.
By week’s end, Freeman nearly averaged a double-double with 15 points and 8.7 rebounds per game to go with a .556 shooting percentage.
NMSU looks to remain perfect on the year as they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for a bout with the Arizona Wildcats at the McKale Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
