Volatile organic compound monitoring
The Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center (CEMRC) has received funding from Washington Tru Solutions to support the Department of Energy Waste Isolation Pilot Project, a deep geologic repository that has been disposing of transuranic nuclear waste for the last seven years. CEMRC provides analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and flammable constituents in the underground air at the WIPP. These analyses help ensure worker safety and regulatory compliance and demonstrate the long-term safe operation of the nuclear repository. The increase in funding is for $120,000, bringing the award total to $585,000. CEMRC is part of the NMSU College of Engineering and is directed by Dr. James Conca.
