On Saturday, April 25, Tracey O’Neil, program manager for the New Mexico State University College of Engineering, was inducted to the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest Board of Directors in Odessa, Tex.
The board serves more than 10,000 Girl Scout members in partnership with 1,500 plus adult members throughout 33 counties in southern New Mexico and west Texas. The mission of the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest is “to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.”
“I am honored to be part of the Girl Scouts of the Desert Southwest Board,” O’Neil said. “I hope through my involvement on the board, I will be able to encourage and inspire girls to be strong leaders in their communities.”
O’Neil develops and manages many of the College of Engineering K-12 outreach efforts such as the Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology Robotics program, the New Mexico State VEX Robotics Competition, the Pre-freshman Engineering Program and engineering summer camps. In the last year alone, nearly 1,000 elementary, middle, and high school students were introduced to the concepts of STEM through their participation in these programs.
O’Neil also works with college students to enhance their engineering experience. She recently launched a mentor program for the new Aggie Innovation Space. The Aggie Innovation Space was designed to cultivate student creativity by providing students with the tools and skills necessary to take their projects or ideas to the next level. The mentor program focuses on providing these students with training and skills through peer-to-peer consultations, workshops, and design challenges.
In addition to her work with the students, O’Neil engages industry partners and alumni in the college’s efforts through pop-up workshops for students and faculty, recruiting booths, resume review sessions, partnerships on design challenges in the Innovation Space and the College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council. O’Neil has her bachelor’s degree in journalism with an emphasis on public relations and is currently pursuing her MBA. She is originally from Roswell, NM.
