Halliburton launches Global Scholars Program at NMSU
Representatives from Halliburton visited the College of Engineering at NMSU to launch the Halliburton Global Scholars Program recently. Halliburton’s gift will benefit 10 engineering students.
Halliburton representatives Jeff Coburn, Northern Region Cementing Manager, and Richard Montman, Northern Region Operations Manager and also an NMSU alumnus, presented Interim Dean Kenneth R. White with a $15,000 gift to establish a scholarship fund.
Through the Halliburton Global Scholars program, the College of Engineering will award 10 merit-based scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each to juniors and seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Half of the scholarships will be awarded to underrepresented ethnic minorities and female students. NMSU’s student population is highly diverse: the university is ranked tenth in the nation for engineering graduates by Hispanic Business Magazine and approximately half of the engineering student population is comprised from ethnic minorities.
In addition to scholarships, the Halliburton Scholars Program will provide opportunities for the recipients to meet Halliburton representatives either on campus or at Halliburton facilities in Houston or Duncan, Okla., allowing them to learn about career opportunities with the company.
“The relationship doesn’t stop here. We hope these scholarships will not only allow New Mexico State students to offset their academic costs, but will also enable us build a bridge between New Mexico State and Halliburton as these students complete their education and prepare for future careers in the professional workforce,” said Jeff Coburn. “At Halliburton, we believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work – it’s as much a part of our culture as providing exceptional service to the customer.”
After touring some of the College of Engineering facilities and laboratories, Montman said, “I’m proud that I received my education here at NMSU. My degree has served me well.”
“We are pleased to be able to foster a long-term relationship with Halliburton that will serve as a conduit for future workforce needs within the company. We welcome the prospect of enhancing career opportunities for our diverse engineering student population on a global scale,” said White.
