Electrical engineers earn outstanding paper award
New Mexico State University electrical and computer engineering students Ivan Mecimore and William Fahrenkrog, along with Associate Professor Charles Creusere, received an outstanding paper award from the International Test and Evaluation Association on Jan. 13 at the Live Virtual Constructive Conference held in El Paso, Tex.
The paper, titled “Bitstream Based Edge Detection Techniques,” discussed a technique that improves the processing of video images over distributed wireless sensor networks.
Creusere said the technique can be used to help search large databases of compressed JPEG images for content more quickly because the comparisons can be performed on compressed images, which require less data to be processed.
Mecimore, who is currently working on his doctoral degree in electrical engineering, said, “It was a very good learning experience being able to talk with and present to people with related experience within the industry,” he said.
Mecimore also added that Creusere has been a great supporter.
“Dr. Creusere has been a tremendous source of knowledge as I have worked along side him for the past two years,” he said. “He always provides good insight towards the problems I have come across and has pushed me to learn more.”
