Former NMSU mechanical engineering professor passes


Phillip Smith

Phillip Ronald Smith was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on November 10, 1934 to Russell and Myrtle Estelle Smith. Phillip passed from this life on April 18, 2015.

Smith received a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1964. He taught mechanical engineering at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico from 1964 until 2006. He was a long-time member of the Miranda Street Church of Christ in Las Cruces where he often lead singing and taught Bible classes. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Russell Darryl Smith. Smith is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ellen Smith; brothers David Smith and John Mark Smith (Glenda Smith); sons Brent Smith and Bruce Smith; daughter Aleece Gaughan (Patrick Gaughan); and grandchildren Alicia Smith, Bruce Patrick Smith, Paul Gaughan, Amelia Gaughan, Claire Gaughan and Susan Gaughan. He is remembered as a professional engineer and educator, a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather, and most importantly, a humble, faithful servant of God.
