WERC's Environmental Design Contest

WERC's Environmental Design Contest is a unique event that brings together industry, government and academia in the search for improved environmental solutions. Held annually since 1991 at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the contest draws hundreds of college students from throughout the United States and around the world. A parallel high school-level contest was started in 1998.

The student teams design solutions for real-world problems while developing fully operational bench-scale solutions that are presented to panels of judges comprised of environmental professionals. The teams prepare four different presentations: written, oral, poster and bench-scale model.

Order of the Engineer

The purpose of the Order of the Engineer is to foster a feeling of pride in the dedication to the engineering profession. The order is symbolized by the acceptance of an "Obligation" and wearing of a stainless steel ring on the pinky finger of the working hand. This "Obligation" is a composite of several creeds and emphasizes the fact the engineers have certain obligations to society. The Order promotes honesty and integrity recognizing that today's Engineers are dependant on their predecessors for their skills. The Order of the Engineer ceremony is scheduled 2-3 weeks before the end of each semester.

Sociedad de Ingenieros

The Sociedad de Ingenieros was established in the College of Engineering at New Mexico State University on December 12, 1989 to give recognition to each new graduate of the College of Engineering prior to commencement. The ceremony is conducted the Friday prior to commencement with all graduates, their families, and guests invited to attend.

There is no other requirement for membership other than successfully completing an engineering degree program and qualifying for a degree. Each graduate who attends the ceremony is recognized by their Department Head and Dean with a certificate of membership in the Society and a medallion. For more information, contact Cathy Lindsay at (505) 646-2913.
