The Bromilow Awards are conferred annually by the College of Engineering in recognition of Frank Bromilow's leadership and enhancement of the quality of faculty during his tenure as dean of the College of Engineering.

Frank Bromilow came to New Mexico State University in 1951 as professor and head of civil engineering. In 1961, he became Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Engineering Experiment Station -- positions he held until his death in 1974.

During his years as Dean, the College grew in terms of faculty, program quality and physical facilities. In recognition of his contributions, the area in the center of the engineering complex was named the Bromilow Mall.

Dean Bromilow received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1937 and his master's degree from the same institution in 1939.  He pursued additional graduate study at Carnegie Tech in 1941 and 1942.

Dean Bromilow served the engineering profession well: a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Pennsylvania and New Mexico; a member of the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in New Mexico; a Director of the National Society of Professional Engineers; a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and President of the New Mexico Society of Professional Engineers.

The Bromilow Awards are considered annually by the College of Engineering in recognition of Frank Bromilow's leadership and enhancement of the quality of faculty during his tenure as Dean of the College of Engineering .

In 1978, the awards for faculty and staff excellence were established to perpetuate the high level of excellence that Dean Bromilow sought to develop in the College. The faculty award is given alternately for excellence in teaching and excellence in research. This year's award is given for excellence in research. Recipients for the faculty award are selected by the College of Engineering Department Heads from nominees submitted by the engineering faculty. The monetary awards are derived from earnings from donations received from family, alumni and friends and matched by endowed lectureships established through appropriations by the State Legislature.
