Dr. Lotfy El-Sayed

Dr. Lotfy El-Sayed was born on 10/15/1958 in Alexandria , Egypt .  He received his B.S. from University of Helwan and was among the top 10 students in his graduating class.  Therefore he was appointed as an assistant at his university (which is how the system in Egypt works) and received a governmental scholarship to study his M.S. and Ph.D. in the U.S.   After receiving his Ph.D. from NMSU (Advisor Dr. Eldon Steelman), Lofty returned to Egypt to become an Assistant Professor at the University of Helwan and where he became an Associate Professor later on.  Lotfy was on a leave of absence from his university where he was teaching in a Saudi University .  Lofty had just finished the muslim Haj when he decided to take advantage of the remaining few days between the semesters in Saudi to visit his family in Egypt .  As flights were rare to find in that season when most people are returning from Haj, Lotfy unfortunately decided to take the Ferry that capsized in the Red Sea .  Lotfy is survived by his wife, a daughter who is attending medical school and a son who is still in high-school (all of whom were visiting with him in Saudi but flew back earlier).  He comes from a family that values education.  His Dad is also a Professor of Electrical Engineering and a retired Vice President of a major Egyptian University .  Two of his sisters are Professors and his third is an architect.
