Placement in English and Mathematics for High School Students

Students are placed in their initial English class at New Mexico State based on their English ACT score. An English ACT of 16 or higher qualifies you for ENGL 111G, Rhetoric and Composition; an English ACT of 25 or higher qualifies you for ENGL 111H, Rhetoric and Composition-Honors. Students with English ACT scores lower than 16 must complete developmental English coursework through the Dona Ana Branch Community College prior to enrolling in ENGL 111G.

All incoming engineering students must take the Math Placement Exam (MPE). Regardless of your ACT or SAT score you are still required to take the MPE. If you wish to enroll in Math 191 (the calculus series) you must take the MPE and achieve a qualifying score. The Mathematics Placement Exam is given on a walk-in basis in the Mathematics Testing Center, Walden Hall, Room 101. The MPE is most commonly taken at one of the New Student Registration sessions that all incoming freshman are required to attend. If you will be taking the MPE after not having taken mathematics for a few months, it's a good idea to brush up during the week or two before the program so that your placement will be a more accurate reflection of what you know.
